Fred Beazley, a Portsmouth businessman and philanthropist, established the Beazley Foundation in 1948. Judge Richard Bray, former Chairman of the Board stated, “it was Mr. Beazley’s dream to educate as many young people as possible and give them an opportunity they didn’t have.” The Beazley Foundation’s focus remains consistent with the founder’s wishes providing grants for healthcare, housing, education, and recreation.
The Foundation funded the move of the planetarium from Manor High School to the Children’s Museum of Virginia when the museum was relocated to its present location. The Beazley Foundation continues to support upgrades to the planetarium named for Fred Beazley.
